I will admit that this movie is a bit of a tacky romance, but I think this is a modern day classic that everyone should watch at one point of time or another (too far? Well, maybe not classic, but definitely a pop culture reference). It is the story of bodyguard Jack Farmer (Kevin Costner) who falls for the singer/actress he is hired to protect (Whitney Houston). Farmer is a very dedicated bodyguard who carries a few burdens from his past, yet through his romance with Houston’s character he finds reconciliation with himself. Houston’s acting is passable as Rachel Marren, but it is her vocal performance that is truly memorable and makes her a star.

I was trying to identify if there were some underlying themes that make this more than just a romance, and the best I could come up with is that obsession comes in many forms and can manifest itself in many ways. From the obvious stalking and murder attempts, to the dedication and determination of pursuing a career in show business, each character was pushing their limits to quench their obsessive thirst. It may be a stretch but I offer it as a consideration the next time you watch this movie.

Again, I acknowledge that this is not a cinematic masterpiece, and even if there are no substantial underlying themes I feel that this is a movie worth watching. In fact I will go a step further and guarantee that by the end of this movie you will be satisfied – if not for the pure enjoyment of watching Kevin Costner for almost 2 hours (ladies?), then for Whitney Houston’s performance of “I Will Always Love You”.
